NYSYLC Board of Directors Announces New Member: Sandra Portocarrero
NYSYLC is proud to announce the newest member joining our Board of Directors: Sandra Portocarrero, Assistant Professor of Management at London School of Economics.
Sandra Portocarrero’s extensive background in research and advancing equity for immigrants and other marginalized communities aligns perfectly with our mission to empower immigrant youth in New York.
Sandra Portocarrero’s research examines how people and organizations sustain or alleviate inequality. She employs qualitative research methods to understand the everyday work lives of minoritized workers and how people and organizations manage the inclusion of those who carry stigmatized social identities.
Using field methods such as in-depth interviews, surveys, and participant observation, she has conducted research with workers at the U.S. Department of State, and public and private universities in the United States and Latin America. In her work, she engages with and extends theories of relational expertise and status.
In her latest projects, Sandra examines the economic and social life of undocumented entrepreneurs in California and of asylum seekers and refugees who become entrepreneurs in New York City. She strives to provide empirical, theoretical and applied insights into consequential diversity, equity, and inclusion related phenomena.
Sandra completed her Ph.D. in Sociology at Columbia University. She holds a B.A. in Sociology (high honors) from the University of California, Berkeley.
