About the Mentorship
The Undocu-Academy is a closed community group for New York City Undocumented high school youth. We primarily support students through the college application process and plans after graduating high school. We are currently working to connect undocumented professionals, college students, graduates, and entrepreneurs with The Undocu Academy scholars.
This year every student in the Academy will have a mentor.
"Mentoring is important, not only because of the knowledge and skills students can learn from mentors, but also because quality mentoring provides professional socialization and greatly enhances students' chances for success." (University of Nebraska)
The program is a volunteer opportunity to support undocumented youth and requires a one-year commitment. During the year, you need to organize two check-ins with your mentee each month. Mentors matched with a senior will be committing to 8 months of participation from October 2021 - June 2022. Mentors matched with a junior will be committing to 2 years of involvement from October 2021 - June 2023. You have the option to tell us your capacity: if you can commit to the mentorship program for 8 or 21 months.
We will be prioritizing applicants who have lived the undocumented experience and went through high school in New York. The New York State Youth Leadership Council Education Team will provide training and support so that you can be a great mentor and make a positive impact.
Mandatory Training Dates
October 4,5,6,7 from 6:30pm - 8:30pm.
